About Surgery
Before Surgery
Most patients arrange to take 1-2 weeks off of work for their surgery. Arrange to have a family member with you for the first 1-2 days after surgery.
You will need to complete labs and other testing with your primary care provider 2-4 weeks prior to surgery. Please give your provider the Pre-Operative Clearance Form we gave you. Do not visit your provider more than 30 days before surgery.
We provide an information packet specific to your surgery. It includes which medications to stop leading up for your surgery.
day of surgery
Your surgery center will inform you of when to stop all food and drink. This is typically midnight the night before surgery.
For information regarding arrival time, directions, and parking, please reach out to your surgery center directly. Unfortunately the exact surgery time and your arrival time are not solidified until the day before surgery. This is determined by the surgery center.
After Surgery:
Keep your wound dressing intact for 48 hours. Keep the wound clean and dry. If the dressing becomes soiled at all, replace it immediately. Extra dressing supplies were provided for dressing changes.
Do not shower or bathe for the first 72 hours. After that remove the dressing. The glue or steri-strips will slowly fall off. Do not bathe or swim until cleared to do so.
You can resume normal activities of daily living the next day. No lifting overhead besides for hygiene. No lifting objects more than 15 pounds.
You can resume a normal diet when you return home.
If you were prescribed an antibiotic, take it as directed until the bottle is empty.
If you were given a flexible, soft neck collar, you may wear it as needed for comfort for 2 weeks.
If you were given a plastic, hard neck collar, wear it during waking hours except showering and meals. It may be removed for sleeping. It must be worn while driving or taking transportation.
You cannot drive while using pain medication.
All surgery patients will have a 2-week follow-up visit.
Please call the office at 415-775-1095 during business hours for any questions, concerns, or to schedule a follow-up. For urgent evening or weekend questions, please call the number provided on your surgery day.
